Port of Thessaloniki

Land Transport and Travel To and From Port Thessaloniki
(Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece)

Thessaloniki is well-situated for convenient transportation. It is located directly west of Turkey and has Bulgaria 200 km / 125 miles to the north.

Well-planned roads link the city with greater Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria.

Travel by Bus and Shuttles

Greek Road Transport Company (KTEL) is the bus service provider for Greece. From the bus terminal in Thessaloniki, there are ten daily departures to Athens, with the journey taking approximately 7 hours.

Car Hire and Road Travel

If you are travelling by car from Athens, take the National Road direct to the port. This journey will take approximately 6 to 8 hours. To reach the port by car from the centre of town, you need to take Tsimiski 5 and drive away from the YMCA Square. Turn left at Salaminos and you will see signs directing you towards the port.

Car hire is available in Thessaloniki and the city's status as a transportation hub ensures that plenty of companies are represented. Booking ahead of time with an online agency ensures the best rate by facilitating an online forum where several firms compete for your business.

Trains and Rail Travel

Hellenic Railways Organisation Ltd (OSE) is the national railway company. The city is serviced by a line to Istanbul and Bulgaria as well as a line to Athens. An express train from Athens takes six hours and is notoriously crowded. The overnight sleeper is the more comfortable option.

Car Parking

Long- and short-term parking is available at the port on a paved, open-air lot with room for 250 vehicles. This lot is adjacent to the Port's Passenger Station near the city's commercial centre. The lot can be accessed via the Axiou Street entrance just beyond the Central Gate.

Travel by Taxis

There is a taxi stand at the port offering affordable fares to the town centre. The airport is about 16 km / 10 miles from the city and is frequently serviced by taxis. Enquiries should be directed to the information desk at the main terminal.
